The Inn At Moonlight Beach is our
home. We are not a commercial hotel. As such, we
do not have a "front desk" or a staff of employees on call 24/7. Since
we're often out and about enjoying our beach-town paradise, we've created this
website to answer your questions. You can even "look
into" our reservation computer directly from your
Our rates are based on double occupancy. Third and fourth occupants are $18 per person (only the Beach & Serenity Suites can accommodate more than 2 people). See rooms and rates for more information.
Most B&Bs require a minimum stay of 2 nights. We make some exceptions. The reservation system will not accept a single-night stay until 21 days prior to the check-in date. A weekend single-night stay will be not be accepted by the system until the Sunday preceding the weekend check-in. See our Single Night Stay Policy Page for complete details.
Single-night Stay Fees: Single Night Stays incur an $18 single-night-stay fee ($28 for Penthouse) - see the Single Night Stay Page for more details and why the elves charge such a fee. The Moonlight Elves recommend that you read it because it explains how they add single night stay fees manually after they receive your reservation.
Reservations may be made on-line or by telephone. The Moonlight Beach elves will instantly and magically charge your credit card a 50% deposit, then charge the balance due about 24 hours before your scheduled arrival.
Immediate Confirmation: You will receive an instant email confirmation and receipt. Please review it very carefully for accuracy, check-in procedures and driving directions. The email confirmation process is important, so if you don't receive an email confirmation within 10 minutes of booking, please telephone and let us know.
Room Tax: California and San Diego County requires all inns and hotels to collect a lodging occupancy tax of 10%.
Cancellations: When you book a room at the Inn at Moonlight Beach,
we block, reserve and hold that room specifically for you.
Because we're a small B & B in a resort community where guests book well in
advance, it is difficult for us to re-book rooms without adequate notice.
Please note that you must obtain a cancellation confirmation email. If you have not received
a cancellation email, you have not canceled.
ALL CANCELLATIONS made with sufficient notice receive a refund less a cancellation fee which may be applied as a credit to a future stay within 12 months of the cancellation. If you've booked a 1 or 2 night stay, your deposit will be refunded (less a $50 cancellation fee) if you give us 16 days written notice. 30 days of notice is required (less a $75 cancellation fee) on 3 - 6 night canceled reservations. 45 days of notice is required (less a $125 cancellation fee) on canceled reservations of 7 or more nights. In addition, all cancellations will incur a non-refundable 4% credit card fee (we pay the credit card company 4% for your reservation deposit - they do not refund that 4% to us when we refund to you).
In the unlikely event that you cancel with less than the agreed days
of notice, shorten your stay, or check out early, please understand
that we must ask you to take responsibility for your entire reservation. No
credits or refunds will be issued. We will attempt to rebook your room, and if we can, a partial refund will be made.
Trip Insurance: We strongly recommend Trip Insurance that allows you to "cancel for any reason".
Communication: We always respond to every email. If you email us and do not receive a reply within 8 hours, we have not seen your email - please telephone! Important topics like changes to your reservation and/or cancellation are best handled by telephone.
Special Diets & Breakfast: Our home-made breakfasts are
described on the breakfast tab. We regret that
because we're a small Inn, we cannot accommodate special orders for breakfast.
If you have special diet needs, we can recommend nearby
specialty and health food stores (Trader Joe's, Henry's, Whole Foods,
Check-in Time is 2:30 - 6:00 p.m. p.m. Please do not arrive early because we are often doing last-minute errands from noon to 2:25. We time our arrival to be back at the Inn by 2:29 p.m. to welcome you. There are no papers to sign - our system will automatically charge your credit card and email you a receipt the evening before or the morning of your scheduled arrival. Our entry door is around the back, off the parking lot, underneath the stairs.
Ring The Doorbell At Check-in Before 6:00 p.m.: Before 6:00 p.m. ring the doorbell so we can greet you. After 6:00 p.m. (or if we don't respond to the doorbell) look for a note above the doorbell with your name and instructions on finding your room.
After 6:00 p.m. check-in we will leave a note for you above the doorbell. Candles will greet you, the lights in your room will be on and the key in your room door. If you need after-hours assistance, you can't miss the doorbell right next to our entry door beneath the stairs - ring it and we'll come a-running. :-)
If We Are Not Here When You Check-in: Ann and Terry are in and out - on the go - all day long. The elves are here, but you can't see them. Ann often prepares breakfast between 6:30 and 8:00 a. m. then does errands or takes our little dog Max for a walk. Terry may be out birding, flying, at the gym or hiking the mountains. Please make yourself at home when we're not around and don't hesitate to call us on our cell phones (printed next to the doorbell and on each of the confirmation emails you will receive prior to your arrival) if we don't respond to the doorbell.
Gift Certificates: A gift certificate to a night's stay at the Inn is the perfect gift for a loved one or that "hard to buy for" relative. In $100, $150 or $200 denominations - or call us for a custom order. Click here to be taken directly to the Gift Certificate screen.
Housekeeping: Your room will be freshened between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. if you vacate your room for at least an hour. Our housekeeper Vjollca (pronounced Vee-OHL-sah) moved here last year from Albania with her husband. Vjollca is learning English much faster than we would be able to learn Albanian! :-)
Parking: We have free off-street parking for one vehicle per guest - strictly enforced. We regret that due to the extremely limited parking, we cannot accommodate non-guest vehicles even for brief periods. Additional vehicles, even parked briefly, will be charged $50 per occurance. Registerd guests with more than one vehicle will find safe, free, lighted, overnight parking available one block away at the Encinitas Train Station. Vans, large SUVs and pickup trucks must park in one of the three marked spaces in the "front lot" (between the inn and the street), not in our tiny "up top" lot behind the inn that has room for only 3 normal sized cars.
Guests of Guests: We welcome you as guests in our home. Due to extremely limited parking and the intimacy of our inn and grounds, we regret that we cannot accommodate guests of our guests - even for brief visits. The nearby Encinitas Best Western Hotel provides accommodations suitable for small and large social gatherings.
Children and Occupancy Limit: To ensure peace and tranquility for our guests, we cannot accommodate small children. Quiet, well-mannered children 6 years and older are welcome. All children under 13 years old are required to be accompanied by an adult at all times. Occupancy is limited to 2 persons per room except for the Beach and Serenity Suites which sleep up to 4. Unauthorized guests or children under 6 years of age will each be charged an additional $75 per night.
Trains: Train tracks are across the street from the Inn. Trains run along the Southern California coast for 200 miles from Santa Barbara to downtown San Diego. We like them - they are part of our coastal landscape. Sometimes they sound their whistle in front of the Inn. Air Conditioning: We enjoy fresh ocean sea breezes 360 days a year. Learn more about our natural sea breeze air conditioning. Weather here is usually in the 60s during the winter and 70s during the summer. October and November brings three or four "Santa Ana Winds" days where temperatures reach 80 degrees here at our beach community.
Peek-A-Boo Ocean Views: We're located 2 blocks from
Moonlight State Beach and 3 blocks from the water's edge. No Bed and
Breakfast Inns are closer to the beach. Read about our peek-a-boo ocean views.
Smoking & Pets: The Inn is a non-smoking inn, which includes not only the rooms, but the grounds and decks. We regret that we cannot accept pets. We recommend the Encinitas Best Western.
Tranquil and Peaceful Is Our Motto: Our bedroom is located directly above the garage and parking area. Please keep televisions and radios on low volume so as not to disturb other guests who may be meditating, reading, napping or just enjoying the fresh ocean breezes. Quiet and relaxing, tranquil and peaceful... that's our motto.
Cell Phones: Please respect the privacy of other guests and
limit cell phone usage to your room, never in the Sunroom, the parking
lot, decks or other common areas.
Penthouse: The Penthouse has a private deck with private hot tub. We keep a sparkling clean hot tub for you. By renting the Penthouse, you certify that you have read and agree to our hot tub rules. The hot tub is for our Penthouse guests only, we regret that grandchildren or friends in other rooms at the Inn may not join you.
Check-out time is 11:00 a.m. No need to stop in the office. Just leave
your key in the room and bon voyage! We regret that we cannot accommodate
late checkouts as we need the time to prepare for the next arriving
guests. Late room check-outs will incur a charge of $50
after 11:00 a.m. and $50 per hour thereafter.
Lost Key: Lost keys or non-returned keys will be charged $25 to the credit card making the reservation.
Forget Something? If there is anything we can do to
make your stay more comfortable (toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, etc) please
let us know.
Special Occasion Personal Shopping: We will purchase flower arrangement like roses, romantic gifts like Godiva Chocolates and/or and/or wine or champagne for our guests if they request it at least a few days ahead of time. Ann buys what you want from the local market or wholesale florist and arranges them and has them waiting for you in the room. We add a $20 service fee to our actual cost for this "shopping and delivery service" so you can have a dozen roses and chocolates, for example, waiting in your room for about $45 - $50 (rather than $95 - $120 from a florist).

Reservations By Phone: The inn is our home. We don't have a staff or front desk. We are often away from the reservation computer, so if you are at a computer right now, you already know more about availability and prices than we would if we're away from the inn when you reach us. We understand many guests feel more comfortable speaking with us first, and encourage you to call us on our home phone if you wish to speak with us personally - after checking prices and availability. Our inn is not a commercial establishment, so please don't "drop in" without an appointment or reservation. We operate "By Advance Reservation Only" as we value our privacy and the privacy of our guests.
